There is some evidence to suggest that Dextromethorphan has an effect on serotonin, so an overdose could cause something similar to a Serotonin Syndrome.

Yes it can cause serotonin syndrome but that is only the tip of the iceburg

DXM is a potent dissociative,in low doses it causes a stoning effect, then movement is disturbed, psychomimitic effects, and out of body experiances occur at dose of 20mg per kg.

Also there is a difference between cough medicines and cough/cold medicines. Products such as Nyquil contain a variety of drugs that are toxic in overdosage, doxylamine/diphenhydramine, pseudoephedrine, acetominophen (tylenol)
