In the literature for Effexor XR, it says in the patient dosage section "Effexor XR should be administered in a single dose." My psychiatrist told me to take half my dose in the morning and half at night.
I am taking 225 mg of Effexor XR per day, one 75 mg capsule and one 37.5 mg capsule in the morning and repeat again at night. These capsules are time release.
I am concerned about whether or not I am taking this medication correctly, and question whether my doctor has made a dosing mistake?

I think (it's been a while and I tend to forget) the intent is to minimize side effects, especially when increasing dosage since the patient's system isn't used to the full amount all at once. I took mine that way for a few days, but I now take all of mine in the morning, because I sleep better that way.
You may want to call her and mention the discrepancy between her instructions and the package insert's. My guess is that she probably has a reason for splitting the dosage, but it never hurts to check.

I also split mine between morninga nd evening. I was on 150mg am, and 150mg pm, and now am 75mg am, and 150mg pm.... pdoc said this was to minimise side affects, and keep a good level of the drug in my body the whole time (I was fluctuating up and down and awful lot).

I used to take 150 mg Effexor XR at night and 37.5 mg in the morning also but I had to start taking it all in the morning because I couldn't sleep at night.
I agree with the other two posts... this is probably to minimize side effects.
Eventually you may want to take it all at once too.
