adrafinil question: JohnL?

Posted by cole on October 24, 2000, at 15:17:46

when i asked about adrafinil earlier you mentioned taking remeron. i am on remeron and have unstoppable hunger with it-- i feel like my stomach is empty even when i just ate. the provigil has totally killed that hunger but i am still spacey. i think i need to try the adrafinil. my question is whether adrafinil helps with remeron hunger and weight gain, or if you control that in another way. also, i learned that provigil interferes with the efficacy of birth control pills. do you know if adrafinil has a similar effect, being that it is provigil's predecessor? thanks so much.

Cole,
Adrafinil did not seem to have any effect on appetite for me. Provigil did decrease my appetite, but Adrafinil did not.

I don't know if Adrafinil will affect how another medication works, as Provigil affects birth control pills. All I can say for sure is that, despite their close molecular structures, these two medications are completely different in every way I can think of.

Among other things that Remeron does, it blocks certain receptors in the gut. Thus you feel hungry, even when you're not. After about three months, that goes away. The weight gain of Remeron is common during the first three months or so, but levels off and returns to normal eventually. The bad part is, as we all know, it's much harder to take off those pounds than it was to put them on! For me two things helped. One was to carry with me lowfat lowcalorie snacks. When hungry, I would nibble on them slowly. The other thing was to just remind myself I'm not really hungry. My stomach is tricking me. I'm not going to fall for the trick. I know when I usually eat (before Remeron treatment), and how much, and I'll stick with that. I wish there was an easy answer. Lowfat snacks can help. My favorite was dried blueberries and dried cranberries available at health food stores. Nibble on them one at a time. Low cal, yet very healthy, and helps fill the gap between meals. Be careful not to overeat at meals. It is tempting.

thanks,
i am going to try adrafinil maybe next week, after my exams. i want to research if it will decrease the birth control as well. that information will be hard to find if they usually use it on older folks in europe. . . i appreciate the pointers on the "remeron stomach from hell" problem. i only took remeron for 3 months last time, and then i stopped it to try the reboxetine, so i never experienced remeron without the super hunger. i've been trying to drink more tea, as it seems to increase the hand to mouth axn as well. i did lose weight the last time by taking on of those herbal "fat burners" for a couple of weeks, but that stuff feels like crack (i'm just guessing), and you really crash when you go off of it. thank you so much for answering my questions. i am starting to realize i may need meds for a very long time, and it helps to get the opinion of other people who are traveling the same path.
