Modafinil Description from UK Co., Liver Info

Posted by shar on August 22, 2000, at 14:24:20

International Antiaging Systems has descriptions of their products, and I thought this one for Modafinil was interesting:

"Trade name Modiodal, this is the very latest analogue of Adrafinil and likewise is a unique non-seep-affecting stimulant, specially designed to treat narcolepsy, hypersomnia, and catoplexy. It is considerably more potent than Adrafinil, but is designed to be less likely to be the cause of any liver enzyme problems with long term use. Doses are one or two tablets (100 mg each) as required. Avoid use in the evening. Caution: Modafinil may now be a controlled substance in the usa."

In their description of Adrafinil, they say:
"...Adrafinil's unique feature is that it only arouses when stimulation is required." and "...do not use continuously without liver enzyme blood tests."

From International Antiaging Systems Directory Volume 2, Issue 1.

Web site is www.antiaging-systems.com

They are located in Great Britain, Channel Islands.

P.S. My Adrafinil Experience. Any suggestions?

I've been taking 1200 mg. Adrafinil for about a week. Started at 150 mg., 300, 450, 600, 900, 1200, all for several days each so I could work up slowly. Sadly, I haven't noticed anything.

I don't seem to respond very well to anything. I end up with large doses, and barely notice.

This is very disappointing for me! I thought I might actually feel GOOD for a while.

I will probably try SAMe or Modafinil next.

Any suggestions? My ADs are Effexor XR and Wellbutrin SR and do keep me from the black pit. Klonopin at night.

Hey Shar,
Well, the odds are quoted as 70% for success with sam-e. It's expensive, but there are few side effects. It can cause a bit of stomach discomfort, first try it without food (its better absorbed that way), if you feel too uncomfortable try with acidolphilous. It may also make you feel a bit jittery, but generally that goes away. You should be taking vitamin B6 and folic acid with it. (If you can find Richard Brown's Stop Depression Now, that's the bible). And you should be taking Nature's Made Brand--which I understand is cheapest at COSCO's or on the internet. You start at 400mg and keep going up by 400 every week. If you've hit 1600 and don't feel better, it's not the drug for you. shellie

Shellie,
Thanks for the info. I was at Sam's Club (probably like Costco) and they were selling Nature made SAMe at about 55 cents per pill (used to be about $1 per pill). I failed to look at the mg of each pill, tho. I will go check it out again.

Have you tried SAMe? Any success? How is the Adrafinil doing now that you have some? have you decided to go ahead and start with it?

I appreciate your response--
Shar

I did try Sam-e, up to 1600 mg with no success. I was already depressed, and I ended up with an agitated depression. But I do know that lots of people have had tremendous success with it.

I started taking the adrafinil with topomax and nardil and my therapist freaked out, said I was being impulsive for not waiting for my pdoc to come back from vacation. I was sort of getting a little bit of bad amphetimine feeling on adrafinil anyway, but I wanted to keep trying. Then I saw the pdoc who was covering for my pdoc while on vacation and she felt like I was putting her in an awkward position since my pdoc didn't know I was trying all three together. So I stopped. I'm incredibly angry at my pdoc because one of the things we had talked about was a planned hospitalization to get off the nardil and then back on again (this worked for me five years ago); yet when I brought this up in the hospital (on the phone--she was not my doctor in the hospital), she told me I was complicating everything and we should stick to the topomax. So now I'm up to 150mg of topomax, I'm exhausted and still very depressed and she's been on vacation since I've been out of the hospital. I didn't even know she was going on vacation. For the first time in six years I am totally angry at her and don't feel like paying her $125 dollars to discuss my anger. I'm in a bind!

I think it's okay for me to go to consultations where I pay, but this is showing me why it is not okay to work with a pdoc who does not accept my insurance.

Anyway, if I were you, I'd try sam-e. It has the same rate of success as other antidepressants and much less side effects. Those who are successful with it, are thrilled. Good luck with which ever you choose next. Keep us informed. Shellie
