New to Effexor

Posted by Larry on August 13, 2000, at 14:49:02

Gosh, after reading some of these comments I almost wish I didn't find this website. Just started Effexor with kit. Prescribed for years of high job stress which I seem to be unable to control & poured over into life outside of work. Will give it a try & if results are negative believe I will just go back to hanging by my teeth as I have been. Have never been on an anti-depressant before. I hope all others do very well.

Yes, that can be pretty scary, reading negative posts. However, it is very important to remember that antidepressants are very particular; some people will do fine from the start, some people have a rough start and then do fine, for some people it's not a good solution.

It's important to give Effexor a chance to work fully (4-6 weeks at least). If it's a good match, you will feel better than before and not be hanging on by your teeth. (I sure remember that feeling!)

I use Effexor now for depression, been on it a long time. I have very few side effects, and it keeps me much more steady--no falls into the black pit since I've been using it. It was sort of sedating at first, so my doc and I added Wellbutrin which is more stimulating. I don't have problems with this combo either.

However, I had friends who strongly urged me not to try Wellbutrin because it was so horrible. But, I don't have trouble with it.

There are people here who love Serzone, and I had a very rough time with that one.

So, it's all very different for different people.

Hang in there. Don't hesitate to post here or ask questions about your meds, etc. You may want to look in the archives. I know the last few had some Effexor threads.

Good luck!
Shar

Hi Larry,

I've had chronic fatigue syndrome and accompanying depression for several years now. I feel
lucky because both have been pretty mild. Sometimes I wish it would just have gotten really
bad so maybe it would get over with. Sort of like walking around with the sniffles; you wish
you'd just get the flu and get it over with.

I know how you feel with the job stress. I went to school full-time and worked full-time.
Sometimes I wonder how I made it through. I've tried Pamelor, Prozac, Wellbutrin, and
Celexa. I never really felt like they did much of anything. I just felt really tired and
pretty apathetic towards everything. I've been on Effexor XR for about 4 weeks now I guess
and feel like it's the first thing that's helped. I felt something in the first few days
that I took it. Don't know whether it was the meds or the new med "honeymoon" - thinking
that "this will be the one that works". I started out with the kit too. I don't feel
100% by any means. But after feeling in the negative numbers for so many years I'll take
any positive that I can get.

Give it a couple of months or so to work. And work with your doctor on the dosage or
companion meds. Sometimes just one doesn't do the trick.
