Provigil Trial Again Fails:I'm Off the Team, Rick!

Posted by shellie on July 20, 2000, at 20:44:02

It's official, Rick, I'm off the team. After two days, total tiredness and I'm not willing to push it again. I lost almost two weeks feeling too tired to get any work done.

My pdoc just doesn't think stimulants are going to be the way for me to go, but I have ordered adrafinil and will try that (what the heck) even though I looked back through the archives and saw that its biggest proponent also had a positive reaction to ritalin, which I didn't. (That's you JohnL., if you happen to read this).

Since I have to wait for the adrafinil anyway, I decided I may as well do a quick trial of dexadrine (due to your imput, MichaelF.). So I'll try that this weekend. Oh, how exciting my life was been. Stimulants, stimulants, and more stimulants.

If the dexadrine and adrafinil fail
my pdocs recommendation is to combine nardil with topamax. I had a good response to lacmictal--just gained too much weight--(which came off in the first week I stopped it). Topomax is a bit scary to me, because of the experience of affecting thinking, but I keep reading if you go really slowly on the dose, you may not have that problem. The other choice would be to change from nardil to parnate.

So, I'm not expecting much from my dexadrine and adrafinil trials, but who knows, maybe I'll have a pleasant surprise. (I'm due for one).

Anyway, I enjoyed being on your team, although I'm quite willing to join MichaelF's team or JohnL's team or whatever team will get rid of this depression in my chest.

Talk to you soon, Shellie

Shellie -

Sorry to hear the Provigil didn't help you on the second go-around.

Could you please send me your leftovers?

Seriously, it sounds like you've got some decent alternatives lined up to try. I'll keep my fingers cossed for you!

BTW, unless you have anxiety I assume you've tried Wellbutrin at some point, no? How about Selegiline? That was very energizing for me at doses a lot lower than those which are used for depression -- worlds apart from Nardil. (Of course, that stimulation was likely from the amphetamine produced by Selegiline, so maybe we can dismiss that option immediately).

One more thing...you WERE taking an AD at the same time as the Provigil, weren't you? This is a leap given that I'm still sketchy on the details of your situation, diagnoses, med history etc...but perhaps the fatigue is a symptom of your depression. And the recent study that made the rounds here showed Provigil to be effective in jump-starting AD's that werent't working. I don't think it would be an effective AD by itself. But adrafinil might.

Rick

P.S. Hey, at least we don't have to fight over who gets to be team captain!

Shellie,

I wish you the best of luck with your Dexedrine trial.

Everyone is different of course, so what works for one person may not work for another.

I started off by taking 2.5mg of Dexedrine and felt incredible in a couple of hours - depression gone. When I took my next dose of 2.5mg, I started to feel "cloudy" and sleepy, the kind of feeling I experience when my dopamine levels are too high. I added 1mg of Stelazine and the "cloudy" aspect disappeared.

I now take 15mg of Dexedrine with a 1mg dose of Stelazine, twice a day. I have taken this combo for almost three years and haven't felt the need or desire to take more Dexedrine. The thing I would like to stress is I could not take Dexedrine alone - I need to take it with a dopamine reducer. Dexedrine by itself pushes my dopamine levels just a little too high. My "mood centre" requires dopamine but my "anxiety centre" can't tolerate too much dopamine.

I hope this helps in some way. Remember, I could not tolerate or was made worse by Ritalin, Cylert, Adderall and even the long lasting version of Dexedrine but I did respond well to the immediate release version of Dexedrine so your trial may surprise you!

Sincerely,

MichaelF
