Eating & anxiety.
Has anyone else experienced this ?
On no sedatives, ht 5' 11", 180#
For several yrs while depressed & before treatment started, I developed the Sx of becomming quite sleepy shortly after eating. Most of the time it was the evening meal. It was so bad that I would go to sleep sitting up in a restaurant chair with full activity around me. This has continued to some extent & responds to light meals. It is not as bad but still present.
After starting tx with zoloft ( 100mg for nine months ) it changed to a catacolamine effect after eating. For about 2 hrs after a meal, I have increased tremour, nervousness, poor coordination, elevated BP to range of 160/100 HR to 100 or so. After a couple of hrs things settle back down. It happens every time. It it minimally affected by a full dose of Inderal that has otherwise controlled the shakes & BP /HR lability.
This has also happened on celexa 20mg /day.
On both zoloft & celexa, the startup side effects were rough with zero appetite & loss of wt ( about 10 # ) for first 3 wks or so.
Anyone else had or seen this ? any suggestions for control ?

Could it be a social phobia? Does it happen when you eat alone? I had these panic attacks whenever I had to eat in a restaurant or at other's houses. I'm not really social phobic but I do have a serious fear of weight gain and I used to have severe anxiety when anyone else saw me eat.
Then again, could be blood sugar levels. Been tested for glucose tolerance?
The shaking you get now could be some sign of serotonin syndrome, I don't know, just a possibility!!

Thanks for the reply tina
Phobia ? no, I don't think so, don't have any except for paying taxes. love to eat & have always enjoyed food. Enjoyed eating out & still do. It is a major nusiance.
Weight has never been a particular problem or concern, other than I gained about 10# on the zoloft which has been hard to loose.
it is not socially related, that I can tell. It is the same no matter where. It is a little less of a problem when in public as it is easier to be distracted. It appears all automatic & autonomic. It does not start with the eating itself but comes about 20min later or so. If I follow BP & HR it slowly ramps up over the 20 min. It is worse as the meal gets larger.
Yep, had blood sugar tested & had glucose tolerance test. all cold normal.
Yep, also feels like a seratonin type effect, although I do not get any flushing or other things to go with it. The shaking is an intention tremour that gets worse with stress. I was never able to get rid of it while on the zoloft (was bad enough at times it was hard to even write a check ) & and switched to celexa & inderal. It is much better on that combination most of the time.
Klonopin did not completely stop the shakes. Over all the tremour /shakes seemed to either be seratonin effects or incompletely treated anxiety. I could never decide which & neither could the pdoc.
thanks, dan

Hello danf,
I experience this sleepy feelings after eating on a regular basis for most of my life, especially after the evening meal , but not near to the same degree that you describe. I don't think what you describe is that unusual, just the degree that you experience it sounds a bit extreme to me. I just assumed the sleepy feeling was from my body's energy's effort going towards digesting my meals and that I didn't have enough energy left over to remain very alert, charming, and generally just plain conscious.
I would check with a naturopath if I were you, they would know for certain.

Try keeping a diary of what you eat when it's the worst. Might make you more aware of food allergies or something along those lines. Just a suggestion.

To clear things a little. The sleep was sometime ago.
Now it is jitteriness, tremour & BP elevation.
The jitteriness, tremor, BP & HR elevation are how anxiety episodes manifest. Food in the stomach seems to be a trigger.
Simple things like a cup of coffee or a glass of pop, don't do it, even with the caffeine. Small portions of food with tabasco, hot & spicy don't do it.
This is the end of the thread.
