Weight gain and Drugs! Some advice!

Posted by Ellen on March 29, 2000, at 5:51:31

There are alot of posts on this sight regarding weight gain and drugs. I am not a doc, I was a personal trainer/nutrition consultant prior to being diagnosed with manic depression. I have been on every drug under the sun and although certain drugs do cause you to retain fluid, or maybe slow down your metabolism only slightly, the biggest problem is that these drugs cause an increase in appetite, primarily carbohydrates. I also checked this out with my doc. The way to beat it is to try to maintain when you can some control over what you eat. Don't necessarily blame the drugs, epsecially if they are helping you disorder. Knowing this helped me. There is not a whole lot you can do a bout water retention from Lithium, but you do have some control. I am sure many of you out there will not agree with me,but I have been there and I Know it tough, But limit your portions and try to watch your cabohydrate intake. Keep your foods as whole as possible, in other words try to stay away from processed foods and sugar. Try to make a little change everyday. Anyone that wants to e-mail me may do so. bodywizard@aol.com I would be more than willing to help. ELlen

My main problem is not having the "oomph" to actually cook good meals. My husband is vegetarian, and such bans meat from our house, so when I don't want to spend hours cooking, I just stick on some pasta, a sauce and a load of cheese! And I work in a busy office, in the middle of London, where it's pretty hard to get quick, but healthy food at lunch time, at a reasonable price. So, as much as I know it's not the drugs actually causing the weight gain, it's my eating thats causing it, I find it hard to be able to do much about it!!

If only I could employ a cook!!

I know what you mean about not having the will to cook. Lately since starting the Remeron
I've wanting nothing more than to pig out on cakes and chips all the stuff that's horrible for me. I just
increased to 45mg though and the appetite thing has definitely eased off. I even took the med at noon yesterday
and was awake til 11 last night. I'm starting work in London on Tuesday so perhaps things are turning around. Have you
noticed any difference yet?

Jen
