I've been taking carbamazapine for five years 2x200mg for bipolar II. I think it has helped me a great deal. A new doctor I just saw said he didn't think the dose I was taking was preventing a manic episode or helping with my depression. I think he is wrong. I have had much improvement in the last five years with carbamazapine/SSRI. I have had problems with the side effects associated with long term use of the SSRI's ie.- they stop working, fatigue, terrible sleep at night. Carbamazapine has been used for a long time as an anti-convulsant, and more recently for nerve damage. If you are not bipolar it may be one of those reasons. Ask your doctor, sometimes we have to be very assertive with them to find out why we're being treated the way we are.
