I'm thinking about approaching my (trusted) pdoc about changing around my entire med schedule. Here's what brings me here:
1) Dexedrine (30 mg/day, sr)works for the ADD but I feel like a complete zombie when I wake up in the morning until the dexedrine kicks in. My first thought in the morning is about going back to sleep -- all day! Lowering the dose leaves me feeling slow in the evening (MY time). And recently I've just been feeling dependent on this stuff.2) Effexor (150/sr)absolutely quelled my (clinical)depression. I realized this when I came down with the WIERDEST vertigo from an ear infection and, slightly panicked, called my pdoc and told him (eventually) that I absolutely wasn't depressed but that something truely strange was going on (a trip to the clinic and some antihistimines cleared up the problem). That's great, no more severe depression -- but of course I want more. I want rid of the low level depression or dysthymia that has characterized my outlook since I was a kid. I'm pretty sure that the dysthymia and ADD are wrapped up like the old chicken and the egg.
Maybe I'm asking too much. Anybody out there wanna tell me to get over it, or tell me their meds success stories particular to ADD and Dysthymia?
Thanks -- for folks I've never met you're wonderfully supportive and particularly informed.

I can empathize w/how you feel re: the dexidrine. However, even though it's not ideal, at least it sounds like it works...? You can function @ work, get things done, etc.Nothing wrong w/looking for better, but at least you have a "fall-back" option that "works".
As for alternatives, Andrew's comments re: dopamine depletion (dysthymia-like symptoms) seem applicable...check out his earlier post:

On the down-side, I think you have to get some (all?) of the meds from overseas... Good luck!

There're a few he mentions. If you copy the following line/address, and paste it into the address field of your browser, you can tak a look at the whole thing, as well as the discussion before & after:http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/20000312/msgs/27193.html
Or if you like, you can look in the other window for the thread "what's your educated guess".
The specific msg is titled "Re: Educated Guess/Poop Out" by Andrew on 3/16/00.

Thank you. After I posted, I found the thread. Compelling. Dopamine depletion seems to be my biggest problem and I didnt know anything about it or how to remedy it. Pdoc is of no great value when it comrs to state of the art prescribing.
This is the end of the thread.
