Want opinions on T.C.A.'s

Posted by Kev on January 3, 2000, at 23:41:59

I would really appreciate if anyone would like share their experiences- good or bad- of using Doxepin/Sinequan or Limbitrol against Anxiety. I know that these meds are efficacious in blocking Panic, but I am particularly interested in their effect on overall nervousness, agitation, restlessness, tenseness, etc.

I don't know about the drugs you mentioned. But TCAs in general should do well for the conditions you are concerned with. I think the ones most likely to worsen tenseness, irritation, agitation, restlessness are the ones with the highest NE action. Specifically Desipramine or Protriptyline. The one I liked the best was Nortriptyline. It works well for all the symptoms you described, but it has mild side effects compared to other choices. Other TCAs good for your symptoms would be Anafranil, Imipramine, or Amitriptyline. But they will have harsher side effects. All things considered, I would put my vote in for Nortriptyline. JohnL

Kev, Limbitrol is a combo of amitriptyline and chlordiazepoxide (sedative, hypnotic, axiolytic and a muscle relaxant). The Limbitrol will work well on the anxiety well (my case), but then the amitriptyline might kick in and make you sleepy. It's an old drug, but some docs use it, probably due to anxiety and chronic pain (one TCA use). Hope this helps, blessings,

I had "Ludiomil" a little more recent TCA's with good effects on what you mention. It works more on NE than 5 HT, BUT be careful with what you eat because of weight increase as side effect, and maybe too much sedation during the day for some people. But good medic, I had it during 3 years.

James here....

Doxepin is your best bet as it is the most sedating TCA.
